+ about me

There is a part of me that is Pam, and there’s a part of him that is Jim, and that part of me is in love with that part of him.

last month when I was out camp counseling I was attracted to one of the camp staff members even though he looked like Chandler from Friends and I’ve never even seen Friends nor do I find that actor very good looking but now my sisters are taping Friends eps and when I walk into the TV room I find myself staring at Chandler

I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.

Bill Maher is taken apart by Glenn Greenwald for trying to absolve the US from any responsibility for the mass slaughter and destruction in Muslim countries, blaming it on Islamic fundamentalism, as if the Afghanistan and Iraq wars never happened, as if the US wasn’t pushing for more war in Iran, as if it isn’t intervening in Somalia and Yemen.

Wow, what a great week. Bill Maher is being humiliated left and right. Maybe there is some justice in the world…

Bill Maher is one of the most disconcertingly delusional people in the media. His blatant denial of so many issues just makes him really hard to take seriously.

On one hand, religion has been used as a domineering and imperialistic tactic for centuries. Conversion is not always a tool of “yes, let us help these pagan peoples know God” and that much is obvious; conversion can occur because conquerors want the newly colonized to be strung around more easily. We know this, this has been documented and analyzed and rehashed and we Get It.

But atheism, particularly this new wave of atheism led by Dawkins and his ilk, can be blind to its own destruction. Treating people like they’re less intelligent or less evolved because they’ve made the choice to believe in God dismisses the people who have been colonized, who’ve seen their cultures come close to demolition and now feel very strongly about reaccessing their roots. Religion can become a key part of their lives because it’s something (literally) sacred that cannot be touched by imperialism. It’s a survival tactic. It’s a microrebellion. Try telling a Jewish person in central Europe that they’re dumb to trust in an invisible man in the sky; tell a Muslim in Pakistan that there’s never been any proof that an omnipotent power exists; tell the Hindus in India that the Vedas is all made up nonsense. Now tell me that’s “education.”

I should clarify that I’m a (lefty, disgruntled by the institution, practicing) Catholic. I’m not very good at being Catholic but your reasons for trying to make me switch sides are pretty silly, in my mind. I like religion. Some people don’t. That’s fine. At the end of the day I don’t think morality is altogether relative, so as long as you treat other people well, I don’t care what you choose to worship or if you choose to worship.

But there’s a lot of danger in treating religion or lack of religion as an institution. Institutions (and I’m referring to a hierarchical system of people with power who are focused on meeting their goal and expanding their power) should be treated with skepticism. In the past we’ve seen Christianity and even Islam and the religion of ancient Rome wielded as weapons in an attempt to accrue strength for their empire and way of life. That’s scary. That erodes a person’s cultural identity - does that sound familiar? New atheism is doing a similar thing under the guise of “science” and “reason.” Expose religion for the sham it is! Say no to conforming to falsities! You must prove your faith is founded in reality!

Why? Stop telling people what to do and just treat them well.

i really don’t like the way some posts about having sex frequently are made out to imply like fucking a lot of people is the ideal or what you should be doing and if you’re not then there’s something wrong with you and you’re not sex positive or whatever the fuck. some people just genuinely do not find the idea of sleeping with lots of other people appealing. some people really do want to wait until they’re married. some people really are a lot more selective about who they sleep with and that’s okay. there’s nothing wrong with fucking everyone you meet or only fucking one person your whole life or no people at all. idk, everyone should just shut up.
